CONSERVATIVES CALL ON GOVERNMENT TO CANCEL OIL & GAS PRODUCTION CAP
OTTAWA, September 22, 2025 — Common Sense Conservatives are calling on Mark Carney to immediately repeal the oil and gas emissions cap, which in effect is a production cap.
“Simply put, if Liberals vote yes to an emissions cap, they are voting no to a pipeline,” said Andrew Scheer, Conservative MP for Regina-Qu’Appelle.
For years, this Liberal government has done everything in its power to shut down Canadian energy. They either outright vetoed pipelines, or stalled approvals until investors walked away. Carney himself applauded Trudeau for killing the Northern Gateway project.
“By keeping Trudeau’s emissions cap, Carney will continue to strangle our natural resource industry and hand Canada’s energy advantage to our competitors. No new pipelines also means that Canada will continue to be dependent on the US and will ensure Americans buy Canadian energy at a deep discount. Canada is losing billions every year thanks to this terrible Liberal policy.”
The facts are clear. According to the Parliamentary Budget Officer, this cap will destroy over 40,000 jobs, slash GDP by $20.5 billion, and drive investment out of Canada. Killing any projects also starves provincial governments of much-needed revenue to fund hospitals, schools and roads.
That is why Conservatives are forcing Parliament to take a stand. Tomorrow, the House of Commons will vote on a Conservative motion to repeal the production cap and put Canadian workers first.
The motion comes as news is reported that TC Energy, a Canadian company, announced $8.5 billion in new energy projects, including a pipeline. All these new projects are in the United States.
“Liberals have a choice tomorrow. They can lift the cap, legalize pipelines, and put thousands of Canadians back to work, or they can keep the cap and watch billions of dollars flee to the United States,” Scheer said.
