CARNEY’S RECORD ON TRADE IS BAD FOR SASKATCHEWAN
People in Saskatchewan know that Conservatives are always on Saskatchewan’s side. Like everyone in our great province, I was hopeful that Mark Carney would come back from China with a deal to end the unfair tariffs on Canola.
It should not be that hard. After all, the communist regime needs to feed its people and fuel its economy. Canada has what China needs, so Carney had the leverage he needed to eliminate the tariffs.
The Liberals ALSO made the insane decision to give a Beijing-owned company a $1 BILLION loan to build ferries for British Columbia. Canadian tax dollars should never have been used to underwrite a Beijing-owned company in the first place, but Carney could easily have used the threat of its cancellation for additional leverage.
With all that leverage, what did Carney come home with? On Canola, the Liberals say they “expect” China to drop their tariffs to effectively 15%. That is no doubt some relief for hard-working Canola producers. But it is still not zero, and worse than what Canada had under the Conservatives. And, it is just an “expectation,” not actually a done deal. More talk from Carney with no real action.
The other HUGE detail in the fine print is that Carney’s press release admits that the tariff relief on Canadian agriculture is only TEMPORARY, stating the reduction in tariffs is to last “until at least the end of this year.” What does that mean? Will Saskatchewan farmers just get walloped again next harvest?
In return, Carney agreed to let 50,000 Beijing-made EVs into Canada. He also pledged to work
more closely with the communist regime on establishing a New World Order. This is extremely alarming.
While there is no doubt that Donald Trump is attacking Canada’s economy and dismantling our trading and security partnership, falling in behind a communist dictatorship is not the answer.
Carney’s concessions are real and permanent. What Canada got in return is uncertain and temporary.
EVs that function like roving surveillance systems should not be allowed in Canada. Data collection, tracking Canadians and exposing us to a foreign communist regime is an unacceptable national security threat.
The communist regime in Beijing has interfered in at least two Canadian elections, imprisoned our citizens, operates illegal police stations designed to intimidate Canadians, and have admitted to acts of espionage against Canada.
In response, this Liberal government has bowed down and pledged closer cooperation.
Conservatives would make it clear to China that we will scrap the $1 billion loan if the tariffs aren’t permanently and completely scrapped and tell them to stop meddling in our democracy.
If Canadians are looking for an effective and principled foreign policy that expands non-US trade without compromising Canadian safety and sovereignty, they will only find it in the Conservative party.
